Its buildings were used during the First World War for military orthopaedics, before it became a general acute hospital in 1926. In 1935, Hammersmith Hospital was chosen as the home for the British Postgraduate Medical School.
The Hammersmith Hospital prides itself on its international reputation for clinical and academic excellence.
Charing Cross Hospital
At Charing Cross Hospital you can rest assured that you’re being cared for in one of London’s major teaching hospitals.
Charing Cross Hospital is the oldest of the constituent medical schools of Imperial College London. The original Charing Cross was a voluntary hospital called the ‘West London Infirmary’, founded in 1818 near the Strand in Charing Cross. In 1827, it changed its name to Charing Cross Hospital and later established a medical school. It moved to its present location on Fulham Palace Road in 1973.
St Mary's Hospital
St Mary’s Hospital is a famous London landmark. Originally a voluntary hospital, it has been based at the same site in Paddington for over 100 years. Founded in 1845, St Mary’s was the last of the London undergraduate teaching hospitals the original building now forms the Cambridge Wing. Roger Bannister, the first man to run the 4 minute mile, was a famous alumnus of St Mary’s and it was at this hospital that heroin (in 1874) and penicillin (in 1928) were discovered.
We are soon to open a purpose-built private facility at St Mary’s Hospital. This centre will provide General Endocrinology and Diabetes services and Thyroid / Parathyroid surgery.
